A Tanzanian entrepreneur is helping children study after dark with backpacks powered by the sun. Innocent James founded Soma Bags to give rural pupils an affordable alternative to costly and polluting kerosene lamps.
Each bag has a solar panel that charges during the walk to school, providing up to eight hours of light for evening reading.
Made from repurposed cement bags, they are durable, eco-friendly and produced in James’ factory in Mwanza. Last year Soma Bags sold 36,000 units across Africa, partnering with charities and schools to reach children in need.
