Makumbi Wins R2.6m Water Research Grant
Story 1
Stellenbosch University researcher Dr John Paul Makumbi has won a 150-thousand-dollar grant, worth about R2.6 million, to develop an early-warning system for pollution in Africa’s rivers and lakes.
Makumbi will use microbial DNA analysis and machine learning to detect signs of pollution before they cause serious damage to freshwater ecosystems.
The research will cover water systems in Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, South Africa and eSwatini, with the goal of helping water managers protect biodiversity and drinking-water supplies.
The 3-year project will also train postgraduate researchers and technical staff across the participating countries.
