Kelvin sports centre revived after 17 years of neglect

The Game Point Sports Centre in Kelvin, Johannesburg, has been revived after standing vandalised and unused for 17 years.
The upgraded facility now offers soccer, netball, volleyball and padel courts, and has returned as a busy hub for community sport and recreation.
The restoration was made possible through a partnership between the City of Johannesburg’s Sports and Recreation Department, community stakeholders, and private sponsorship support. Ward 109 councillor Lori Coogan says the centre is already improving residents’ quality of life, with regular bookings and teams using the space throughout the week.
Plans are also underway to renovate the clubhouse as part of ongoing upgrades at the site.

Ramaphosa Set for Bafana World Cup Opener in Mexico

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to attend Bafana Bafana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Mexico on the 11th of June in Mexico City.
South Africa will face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, 16 years after the two nations met in the opening game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Johannesburg.
The 2026 tournament will be co hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada and will feature 48 teams for the first time. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie says he is excited that President Ramaphosa will attend the match .
