Kelvin sports centre revived after 17 years of neglect
Story 1
The Game Point Sports Centre in Kelvin, Johannesburg, has been revived after standing vandalised and unused for 17 years. The upgraded facility now offers soccer, netball, volleyball and padel courts, and has returned as a busy hub for community sport and recreation.
The restoration was made possible through a partnership between the City of Johannesburg’s Sports and Recreation Department, community stakeholders, and private sponsorship support. Ward 109 councillor Lori Coogan says the centre is already improving residents’ quality of life, with regular bookings and teams using the space throughout the week.
Plans are also underway to renovate the clubhouse as part of ongoing upgrades at the site.

Stellenbosh electric mobility lab leader Professor Thinus Booysen says the research is focusing on affordability, durability and charging systems suited to local conditions.
