George Temba, a graduate of Tshwane University of Technology, has won the Best Student Film award at the 2026 Joburg Film Festival for his film The Silent Inheritance.
The essay film blends fiction, non-fiction, and experimental imagery to explore the unseen legacies shaping young men growing up without wealth or fatherly guidance.
Temba, from Jane Furse in Limpopo, says this recognition marks a significant milestone in his career, building on a previous festival award in 2023.

Volunteers turn derelict Cape Dutch homestead into community centre

A 19th century Cape Dutch homestead in Glencairn Valley, Cape Town, has been brought back to life by local volunteers in partnership with the South African Heritage Resources Agency.
Welcome Cottage, built between 1810 and 1812 and declared a national monument in 1985, had been in disrepair since 1993. Volunteers worked with SAHRA and local museums to research its history and restore the building.
The farmhouse now hosts a nursery, coffee shop, community events, and displays for local businesses, while preserving its historical character.

Johannesburg charity Kindness Like Confetti has handed over 127 dignity bags to The National Children & Violence Trust.
The bags, filled with essentials like underwear, toiletries, and comfort items, will be distributed through the trust’s Victim Support Units to help survivors .
KLC says the initiative ensures victims’ basic needs are met when it’s unsafe to return home, while also offering practical support and restoring a sense of dignity.

Partnership to boost emerging African music talent

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has launched the Tiwa Savage Music Foundation in partnership with African payments company Flutterwave to support emerging creative talent across the continent.
The foundation was unveiled at a Lagos event attended by entertainment, business and government figures, including Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and music producer Don Jazzy.
It will provide music education, mentorship and professional development for artists, producers, composers and sound engineers, while also creating pathways for African musicians to access global industry networks and study at institutions such as Berklee College of Music in the United States
