South African scientist wins global award
Story 1
South African medical researcher Professor Liesl Zühlke has been awarded the 2026 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Laureate for Africa and the Arab States.
Zühlke, based at the University of Cape Town and the SA Medical Research Council, studies heart disease in children caused by untreated infections and has helped improve diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care.
Her work has influenced global health policy, including a World Health Assembly resolution on fever and heart disease, and has reduced post-surgery loss-to-follow-up rates from over 20% to below 1%.
The award was announced in Paris and forms part of the L’Oréal-UNESCO programme that recognises women scientists working across global research fields.

Eastern Cape entrepreneurs offer fuel alternative
Story 3
As fuel prices continue to climb, two young entrepreneurs from the Eastern Cape are offering an alternative.
Their company, Style-E Mobility, has developed electric motorbikes powered by rechargeable batteries instead of petrol engines.
The innovators say the bikes could help delivery drivers and motorists cut operating costs while reducing dependence on fuel.
The technology could also lower delivery fees for consumers by making transport services more affordable.
