The Wits Food Sovereignty Hub officially opened on 22 May 2025 at the university’s West Campus.
This new multi-purpose site supports food production, knowledge sharing, and community gardening.
It aims to help both students and local communities access fresh, responsibly grown produce.
With food prices rising , the Hub focuses on building food systems that do not rely heavily on money.
Since 2015, Wits has grown several gardens on campus, providing fresh vegetables and mental wellness benefits to students.
The Hub will also host workshops, a seedbank, nursery, and compost site, encouraging sustainable, zero-input farming methods.
Partners and volunteers are committed to empowering communities to reduce hunger and dependency on aid through self-sustaining food production.

Street Store Warms Durban’s Community with Dignity

The Denise Hurley Centre, together with Grace Family Church and other partners, hosted its eighth annual Street Store on the grounds of the Denis Hurley Centre near Emmanuel Cathedral in Durban.
Over 10 000 donated clothing items—including men’s sizes and school uniforms—were handed out to those in need with warmth and respect.
High school learners and community donors contributed generously, allowing recipients to browse and select items with dignity.
Volunteers and organisers expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting how this initiative continues to transform lives across Durban.

City Power Expands Smart Meters in Midrand

City Power’s Midrand Service Delivery Centre (SDC) is continuing its major smart metering project to improve electricity management for residents.
The initiative cormmenced in Mayibuye in November 2023, where City Power successfully normalised the area.
On June 3, the entity expanded the project to Klipfontein, following discussions with Ward 32 councillor Dimakatso Moloisane and his leadership team.
As part of this rollout, it has distributed keypads to Klipfontein residents, giving them greater control over their electricity purchases.
Officials hosted educational sessions on May 18 and 24, aiming to provide a stable electricity supply and empower the community to manage their energy consumption more effectively.
