South Africa has debuted its first-ever World Read Aloud Day story in South African Sign Language, titled A New Friend.
This comes as February marks World Read Aloud Month, to get schools, families and communities to get involved in developing children’s language skills and reading.
The story, developed by Sign Language Education and Development, is also available in the country’s remaining 11 official languages to expand access to literacy.
Schools in Polokwane, Heidelberg, and Mpumalanga marked the milestone with reading events involving learners and educators.

Davidson becomes 1st female to referee men’s Six Nations match

Scotland’s Hollie Davidson says it is an honour to referee in the Six Nations.
The 33-year-old is set to become the first female to take charge of a men’s Six Nations match on Saturday, when Ireland hosts Italy in Dublin.
She already officiated 48 Tests – 34 women’s and 13 men’s – Olympic and Commonwealth Games, and two Women’s World Cups.
