7,000-year-old undersea wall discovered off Brittany coast
Story 3
Marine archaeologists in France have uncovered a massive undersea wall off the coast of Brittany, dating back to around 5,000 BC.
The 120-metre-long structure, believed to be either a fish-trap or protective dyke, would originally have stood on the shoreline and is now submerged under nine metres of water.
Large granite monoliths protrude at intervals along the wall, suggesting it was built by a well-organised Stone Age community.
Experts say the discovery may explain local legends of sunken cities and offers new insights into early hunter-gatherer and Neolithic societies in the region.
