Sweethearts Foundation and eWASA names 2025 top recyclers
Story 1
The Sweethearts Foundation and EPR Waste Association of South Africa have named their top recyclers for 2025, celebrating schools that collected plastic tops and bread tags to help provide wheelchairs.
The recycled plastic is turned into raw materials for manufacturing, and the money earned from selling these plastics is then used to fund the wheelchairs.
Beaumont Primary in the Western Cape led the challenge, recycling 42 five-litre bottles of tags, followed by Cornerstone Play & Learn in Gqeberha.
Other top schools included Tyger Valley College in Gauteng and St Mark’s Christian School in the Eastern Cape.
The Good Things Guy reports that in total, the initiative helped recycle over 100 000 kg of plastic and gifted 50 wheelchairs to children and adults in need.

Caregiver Learning Through Play programme
Story 2
South Africa’s Caregiver Learning Through Play programme is transforming early childhood learning in marginalised communities.
Now in its second phase, the initiative equips caregivers with tools to stimulate children’s development through play and nutrition.
Experts say that children learn best when playing — even everyday activities, like cooking with a tomato, can become fun lessons in colours and cognition.
By supporting caregivers as children’s first teachers, the programme is helping young minds grow, learn, and thrive in their crucial early years.
