Great Barrier Reef Shows Signs of Recovery
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is showing early signs of recovery after recent mass coral bleaching events, with coral cover increasing in two of its three main regions.
Coral cover increased by 16.7 percent in the northern region and 10.2 percent in the central region compared with last year, helped by a monsoon that brought cloud cover and cooler sea temperatures.
The recovery is encouraging for the thousands of marine species that depend on the Reef, as well as the tourism and coastal communities it supports. Scientists surveyed 121 reefs, with most recording moderate to high coral cover.
