Yakult Delivery Workers Bring Connection in Ageing Japan
Teaser / Tailpiece story
As loneliness deepens in Japan—one of the world’s fastest-ageing societies—a network of women known as the Yakult Ladies is providing more than just probiotic milk drinks. They have become a vital source of routine, care and human connection. Japan is among the world’s fastest-ageing economies, with nearly 30% of its population now over 65. As more elderly people live alone and traditional multi-generational households decline, social isolation has become a growing national concern.Across the country, tens of thousands of delivery workers bring probiotic drinks directly to homes. While officially delivery workers, they also act as an informal social safety net—checking in, chatting and offering companionship.
