Johannesburg Water and Wits University pioneer sustainable water access initiative

Johannesburg Water, in partnership with Wits University, has launched a pioneering pilot project to improve access to reliable water in informal settlements by harnessing underground water sources.
The goal of the project is to test the viability, sustainability and scalability of underground water as a complementary source to the city’s bulk water supply.
The initiative, which involves drilling boreholes and setting up local distribution points, targets nine informal settlements in the south of Johannesburg.
Johannesburg Water's Managing director, Ntshavheni Mukwevho says the project is aimed at improving water access in these communities.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Council in the Eastern Cape has approved a budget of ten million rand to upgrade infrastructure at beachfront areas and its resorts ahead of the summer season.
The metro aims to restore the blue flag status of some of its beaches, to attract more visitors and boost the local economy.
The projects include ablution facilities, electrical infrastructure, and lighting to curb crime in the evenings.
