Biovac opens new Cape Town lab to boost Africa’s vaccine innovation

Cape Town-based biopharmaceutical company Biovac has opened a new Product Development Laboratory in partnership with the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The facility strengthens Africa’s ability to research and produce its own vaccines, focusing on mRNA, bacterial and cell culture platforms for diseases such as cholera, TB, HIV and RSV.
It will also help train young scientists and create more than 400 jobs in the next five years, promoting sustainable local manufacturing and positioning South Africa as a leader in vaccine development.
