South Africa selects 12 maths learners

South Africa has selected 12 learners to represent the country at two international mathematics competitions this year.
Six learners will compete at the International Mathematics Olympiad in Shanghai, China, in July, while another six will take part in the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad in Côte d’Ivoire from late June.
The teams were chosen through the South African Mathematics Olympiad programme, which attracts about 85,000 learners annually.
The selected learners will compete against top mathematics students from Africa and more than 100 countries worldwide.

PRASA launches Comrades Marathon train service

PRASA will operate a special train service for spectators attending the Comrades Marathon up run on 14 June 2026.
The return service will run between Durban Station and Cato Ridge, with departures from Durban at 06:30 and return trips at 15:30.
Tickets cost R20 per person.
PRASA introduced the service to help spectators follow the race route while road closures are in place.

WAS Foundation supports Krugersdorp families winter

The WAS Foundation has delivered blankets, food and clothing to vulnerable families in Krugersdorp West as part of its winter outreach project.
Volunteers distributed 750 blankets, 500 loaves of bread, clothing and 165 litres of soup to people in need.
The annual campaign relies on donations and volunteer support to assist families during the cold winter season.
Organisers say the project aims to support people facing hardship during winter.

Mondale learner selected for NASA visit

Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier congratulated Zayaan Abdurahman, a Grade 11 learner at Mondale High School who has been selected as one of eight South African learners to visit the Kennedy Space Center in July.
She earned her place through the South African Space Design Competition for designing futuristic space settlements.
Zayaan says she’s thrilled by the opportunity to compete internationally and tour National Aeronautics and Space Administration facilities in the USA:
