Zamokuhle Gogos, a group of grandmothers from Alexandra who support vulnerable community members, have been recognised through the Halls “Breathe Through It, Mzansi” campaign for their long-standing volunteer work.
For years, the group has provided crocheted blankets, beanies and gloves to children and the elderly, often funding their efforts from their own pensions when support was limited.
Their work has now been recognised with winter care packages including blankets, gloves and beanies, which brought both warmth and encouragement.
The group says the recognition has renewed their motivation to continue serving their community.

Emihle Stali created AI powered smart glasses through his company Spectacles4TheBlind, designed to help users navigate and identify obstacles more independently.
His innovation has been selected among more than 150 startups for the LEAP East Startup Competition in Hong Kong next month, where he will showcase his work on a global stage. He is now seeking support to cover travel and accommodation costs. Emihle explains how the glasses work

The University of Johannesburg is helping improve eyesight and quality of life for people living with albinism through a community eye care initiative.
The University of Johannesburg Optometry Department has been conducting eye examinations at its low vision clinic, with beneficiaries set to receive free prescription spectacles during a handover event in Katlehong on 13 June.
The initiative forms part of International Albinism Awareness Day and focuses on improving access to essential eye care services for those who often face visual challenges linked to the condition.
Organisers say the programme is aimed at improving independence, learning opportunities and daily living for participants.
