Food campaign raises 16 million meals

Food Lover’s Market and FoodForward SA have raised more than 16 million meals through the 10th annual Hunger Month campaign held in May.
The campaign brought together shoppers, suppliers, staff and partners to donate food and support distribution to people experiencing food insecurity.
FoodForward SA says the meals will support nearly one million people through its food recovery and redistribution system.
The campaign is part of a 10-year partnership that has delivered more than 37 million meals across South Africa.

Burgersfort doctor funds patients’ treatment costs

A doctor in Burgersfort in Limpopo is using income from a kota business to fund medical care for patients who cannot afford treatment.
Dr Ephraim Kgoete started the initiative after seeing long waiting lists and delays in the public health system.
Through the project, he pays for or subsidises surgeries and other procedures for patients in need, with seven people already assisted since last year.
He plans to expand the programme through partnerships and funding support to reach more vulnerable patients:

PACT hosts Durban dog adoption day

Phoenix Animal Care and Treatment (PACT) will host an adoption day in Durban North on Saturday, 13 June, to find homes for dogs at its full kennels.
The organisation says some dogs have been waiting for years for adoption and it cannot take in new rescues until space becomes available.
PACT, which also runs monthly beach walks to showcase dogs, is asking the public to adopt or foster animals and support rescue efforts.
All dogs available for adoption are vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and sterilised.

Netflix selects 14 youth trainees programme

Netflix, in partnership with the Gauteng Film Commission and the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority, has selected 14 young South Africans for a year-long film and television training programme.
The trainees will take up paid placements at production and post-production companies across the country, gaining hands-on industry experience and mentorship.
The programme was announced at a Youth Month event in Johannesburg and aims to help young creatives enter the film and TV sector.
Netflix has also confirmed a second group of trainees will begin the programme in 2027.
