UK to get Europe’s largest oyster reef
Story 3
Four million native oysters will be returned to the seabed off Norfolk, creating what could be Europe’s largest oyster reef. By the end of 2026, 40,000 clay “mother reefs” will be seeded with juvenile oysters, which will grow into adults and form a self-sustaining reef system.
Once mature, the reefs will filter millions of litres of seawater, reduce pollution, and provide habitats for marine life
. Experts say restoring oyster reefs is crucial for healthier seas, stronger coastal ecosystems, and more resilient fisheries.
George Birch of Oyster Heaven says the project will rebuild ecosystems that benefit nature, the climate, and local communities alike.
