Laudium sinkhole repaired, soccer grounds restored

The long-standing sinkhole at Laudium soccer grounds, first appearing in 2019, has been successfully repaired at a cost of R3.2 million, saving R300,000 from the original estimate.
Tshwane MMC Kholofelo Morodi said the project, which began in May 2025, included stabilising the soil, securing electrical cables, and reinstating the pitch, fencing, and irrigation systems.
The restored grounds are now ready to host sporting and recreational activities for the Laudium community.

KZN toddler celebrates first birthday milestone after cleft surgery

Three-year-old Nzulu from KwaZulu-Natal recently blew out his birthday candles for the first time, thanks to cleft lip and palate surgeries through Operation Smile South Africa.
The NGO has provided over 150 free surgeries this year alone, bringing the total to more than 500 life-changing procedures.
Nzulu’s parents say the support gave them hope and transformed their son’s journey.
They first learned about Operation Smile during a cleft awareness workshop for Community Healthcare Workers in rural Bizana, Eastern Cape, which connected families to free surgical care.

Engineer powers home using discarded vape batteries

British engineer Chris Doel has built a battery pack capable of powering his entire home for eight hours using 500 lithium-ion batteries recovered from discarded vapes.
The 26-year-old collected the batteries over six months, soldering them into a 2.5 kWh(kilowatt -hour) battery bank, which successfully ran appliances including a kettle, microwave, and lighting.
Doel, who works for Jaguar Land Rover, hopes to convert the system to solar power for continuous off-grid use.
His project, documented on YouTube, has attracted over four million views and highlights the potential of repurposing e-waste.
