Scimitar-horned oryx moves from extinct in the wild to endangered
Story 3
The scimitar-horned oryx, once extinct in the wild, has now been reclassified as endangered. Conservation efforts over decades, including breeding programs in zoos, private reserves, and collections in the US, UK, Europe, and Abu Dhabi, helped restore the species.
Careful management of genetic diversity through the Marwell studbook allowed healthy populations to be reintroduced.
Since 2016, more than 347 oryx have been released into Chad’s Ouadi Rimé-Ouadi Achim Faunal Reserve, with populations now thriving in the wild in Chad, Tunisia, and Morocco.
