Nal’ibali Celebrates Literacy and Heritage

Nal’ibali is celebrating Literacy Month and Heritage Month under the theme, “My Literacy, My Language, My Heritage.”
The literacy organisation will bring reading, storytelling, language and cultural activities to children, families and communities across seven provinces.
The initiative aims to promote literacy while celebrating South Africa’s diverse languages, cultures and heritage.
Nal’ibali is calling on organisations, communities and partners to support the campaign through collaboration, helping to amplify literacy initiatives across the country.

Yoghurt Tubs Build Katlehong School Library

Used yoghurt tubs collected from schools across Gauteng have been used to make bricks for a library at Morojaneng Primary School in Katlehong.
The library was constructed using bricks made from upcycled yoghurt tubs through Danone’s Tubs2Classrooms project.
It opened in 2024 and now supports learners’ reading.
Grade 6 comprehension scores have risen from 42 percent to 70 percent, while Grade 3 scores increased from 33.2 percent to 50 percent.
The project partners say the initiative is combining waste reduction with improved literacy outcomes.

Smart Devices Support Vulnerable Children

Two North Coast non-profit organisations have received smart devices to support their work with vulnerable children.
Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi donated the devices to the North Coast Courier Orphan Fund and Summerhill House.
Summerhill House will use the devices in its three foster-care homes, while the Orphan Fund will improve communication among 20 NGO co-ordinators.
The department is also considering digital skills training for organisations working with children.
