Two hundred and 54 learners from 25 schools across all nine provinces have competed in the Youth4SaferSA National Debate Championship.
The Free State took first place, followed by North West and KwaZulu-Natal.
Learners researched issues, built arguments and debated ideas around the future of South African education.
The Safer South Africa Foundation says the competition helps learners develop research, public speaking and critical-thinking skills.

A South African maths lecturer has turned his own struggles with the subject into research aimed at helping future learners.
Matome Matsepe, who recently completed a PhD at the University of Pretoria, analysed 1,972 maths tasks across nine South African textbooks.
His research found a need for more tasks that make learners explain their thinking, connect ideas and solve problems rather than only follow formulas.
Matsepe has developed a framework that could help educators improve the way maths is taught in South African classrooms.

FoodForward SA is expanding its Mother and Child Nutrition Programme to 70 more mothers, young children and families in in Cape Town.
The programme, run with the City of Cape Town Health Department, provides nutrition education, growth monitoring and monthly food parcels.
It focuses on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life and aims to address malnutrition and food insecurity.
FoodForward SA says 535 patients have so far completed the full nutrition programme.
