Asian rice harvest hits record high
Story 3
Asia is set to produce around 541 million tonnes of rice this year, nearly double the amount harvested in 1980-81, highlighting continued progress in agriculture.
Yields have steadily increased over decades, from 2.4 tonnes per hectare in 1975 to almost 4.7 tonnes today, thanks to modern farming techniques, improved irrigation, and better crop management.
Rice remains a staple for half the world’s population and a key factor in food security, with current prices around R7,300 per tonne easing some concerns over cost-of-living pressures and shortages.
Experts say these advancements show that even ancient crops can benefit from innovation, helping to reduce hunger and undernourishment in vulnerable regions.
