Joburg launches backup power partnership project

The City of Johannesburg has launched a backup power partnership with Wits University to keep traffic signals running during power outages.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency says the initiative has provided backup power to more than 110 traffic intersections across Johannesburg.

Upgrades in Braamfontein include pedestrian countdown timers, backup power supplies
and audio push buttons to assist visually impared pedestrians.
The rollout forms part of a city-wide Traffic Signal Backup Power Initiative under the Johannesburg Road Agency's Intelligent Transport System Strategy.

Cape Town International Kite Festival to raise awareness for mental health

The 32nd Cape Town International Kite Festival will take place at the Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery, in Cape Town this month.
The initiative uses the colourful spectacle of kite flying to raise awareness on the importance of mental health.
The festival brings together families, communities, kite enthusiasts and advocates for a celebration of hope, resilience and connection and serves as a call for communities to unite in support of mental health awareness and to help build a brighter future for people living with mental health challenges.

Proceeds from every ticket purchased will assist the Cape Mental Health public benefit organization in continuing to provide essential free mental health services to communities across the Western Cape.

IOC names seven countries in 2036 Olympic bid

South Africa is among seven countries that have expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics.

The country has been listed by the International Olympic Committee, alongside India, Qatar, Germany, Hungary, Turkey and South Korea, with countries required to formally declare their interest by the 31st of October.

South Africa has previously hosted major international sporting events, including the 1995 Rugby World Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The IOC says potential hosts will be assessed on factors including their ability to finance the Games, as well as political and public support.
