Potato prices drop to record lows, bringing relief for South African shoppers
Story 2
South Africans are enjoying cheaper grocery bills as potato prices fall to their lowest levels in years.
Ideal weather and a bumper harvest have pushed prices down to between R3.50 and R4 per kilo, less than half of what they were a year ago.
The strong yields and lower export demand have created plenty of supply, keeping costs low for consumers.
While the price dip has put pressure on farmers, it’s welcome news for households already facing high food costs, with analysts expecting the affordability to continue in the coming months.

Refugee turned scientist Omar Yaghi wins Nobel Prize and calls science a global equaliser
Story 3
Palestinian-born chemist Omar Yaghi has won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, sharing the honour with Japan’s Susumu Kitagawa and Britain’s Richard Robson.
The trio was recognised for their pioneering work on metal–organic frameworks, materials that can capture carbon and harvest water from desert air.
Yaghi, who grew up in a refugee family in Jordan, credited the US public education system for giving him the opportunity to succeed.
Now a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, he says his journey shows that science is a powerful equaliser, capable of unlocking potential wherever talent exists.
