Solar and wind overtake coal as world’s top electricity source
Story 3
For the first time on record, solar and wind power have generated more electricity worldwide than coal, according to a new report by energy think tank Ember.
Solar generation grew by 31% and wind by 7.7% in the first half of the year, outpacing global demand increases. Fossil fuel generation fell slightly, signalling a turning point for emissions.
While growth in renewables faces challenges in the US and EU, countries like China and India saw record clean energy expansion, showing that continued investment in solar, wind, and other renewables can meet rising electricity needs while reducing reliance on polluting fossil fuels.
