Language Advocates Gather in Soweto for Mother Language Summit

Language advocates will meet in Soweto on Friday for an International Mother Language Summit, aimed at promoting and protecting indigenous languages.
The event, at Uncle Tom’s Hall in Orlando West, is hosted by the Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights Commission, Ilifa Lethu Institution, and the June & Andrew Mlangeni Foundation under the theme “Save Mother Tongue Now.”
The summit brings together academics, policymakers, and advocates to address challenges facing South Africa’s 12 official languages, including South African Sign Language, in education, commerce, and technology

Teen Leads Campaign to Protect Seabirds

Fourteen-year-old environmental activist Romario Valentine is leading a 2026 seabird conservation campaign aimed at protecting threatened marine bird species.
Based in Mpumalanga, Valentine has supported conservation projects including the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds’ work to save the endangered African penguin, as well as initiatives by BirdLife South Africa such as the Albatross Task Force and the Mouse-Free Marion Project.
Valentine has also helped sponsor 57 hectares of Marion Island for the project, which aims to remove invasive mice threatening seabird populations.
