The Department of Higher Education and Training praised the university for supporting creative research and contributing to South Africa’s arts and culture.

Adopt-A-Community has launched a Zero Waste to Landfill initiative in Dube, Soweto.
The project brings together local leaders, businesses, waste collectors, and community groups to promote recycling, reduce landfill waste, and keep neighbourhoods clean.
Founder Duduzile Ntuli also introduced the BinPack app, which helps residents manage waste and supports a circular economy.
The initiative creates opportunities for local employment and business growth, and community members took part in a Q&A to learn how to get involved.

The World Skills SA National Competition, Conference and Career Festival 2026 is underway from 8–12 March in Durban.
Over 213 students from across South Africa are competing in 27 skill areas to showcase technical expertise, with winners advancing to an international competition in Shanghai in September 2026.
The event is hosted by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Although it fell from 12th place last year to 74th this year, the listing highlights the cinema’s ongoing importance and its status as one of the world’s most beautiful movie houses.
Opened in 1949, the Labia hosts arthouse films and niche festivals, including the South African Horrorfest.
The theatre continues to showcase independent films and festivals, remaining a key part of Cape Town’s film scene.
