Lubanzi Dube wins top prize at Global Startup Championship

Twelve-year-old Lubanzi Dube from Gauteng has won the top prize at the World Startup Forum Championship in Davos in Switzerland.

Dube defeated over 400 competitors from more than 35 countries to become the first Black South African to win the prestigious competition in 26 years.

His winning startup, SolEase is a therapeutic footwear brand that specializes in custom shoe soles designed to relieve discomfort and improve mobility for people with flat feet.

Lubanzi’s concept was inspired by his own personal struggles with flat feet, moving from a personal need to a fully-fledged, award-winning business concept that is now entering production for pharmaceutical distribution.

Lucky Dube Secondary School of Performing Arts launched in Ermelo

The Mpumalanga Department of Education has officially opened the state-of-the-art Lucky Dube Secondary School of Performing Arts in Ermelo.
The institution is the province's first no-fee public secondary school dedicated to performing arts in the province.

The school is named in honour of the late South African reggae legend who was born in Ermelo.

The institution will offer training in music, drama and dance, alongside technical fields such as sound engineering, stage lighting and event production

Professor Ntobeko Ntusi awarded Honorary Doctorate

A South African Medical Research Council president and chief executive officer, Professor Ntobeko Ntusi has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Medical Sciences degree by the University of Glasgow in Scotland in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medical science and global health research.

The doctorate was conferred during the university's Commemoration Day celebrations marking the institution's 575th anniversary.

The University says the award recognises Professor Ntusi's distinguished career as a clinician-scientist, internationally acclaimed cardiovascular researcher and leader in advancing medical science, health equity and research excellence in Africa and globally.

University of Glasgow Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Andy Schofield said the institution's honorary degrees recognise individuals whose work has transformed their professions and made a lasting contribution to society.
