This Autism Awareness Month, the South African Guide Dog Association is highlighting its autism support dog programme.
The organisation has trained and placed 49 dogs with children across South Africa to help them manage daily routines and move more safely in public.
The dogs assist children by reducing anxiety, improving focus, and supporting independence at home, at school, and in public spaces.
To mark the month, it produced a T-shirt featuring 49 paw and handprints created by the children and their dogs, documenting each match.
Staff wear the shirts every Friday to raise awareness as more families remain on the waiting list for support dogs.

Sophiatown returns to the stage from 11 April
Story 3
The theatre production Sophiatown returns to the stage from tomorrow until 24 April, and again from 5 to 8 May 2026.
The play revisits the history of the Johannesburg suburb known in the 1950s for its music, journalism, politics, and vibrant street life before its forced removals.
It follows the stories of people who lived in the community during that period and reflects on its cultural legacy.
Director Aubrey Sekhabi says the production reimagines the story of Sophiatown for a new generation of audiences:
