SA wins top honours at African Spelling Bee Championships

South Africa’s spelling team has won top honours at the African Spelling Bee Championships held in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Six learners presented the trophy to Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube at a ceremony in Pretoria.
The learners competed against teams from across the continent and prepared through extensive reading, research and word study.
The competition tested literacy skills across Africa, while the team now prepares for an international event in China in July:

Santa Shoebox Project opens 2026 applications for schools and ECD centres

The Santa Shoebox Project is inviting South African schools and Early Childhood Development centres to apply to receive support in 2026.
Applications open on 7-April and close on 23 April, with selection confirmed by mid-June.
Selected facilities will receive personalised shoeboxes containing food, clothing, stationery and toys, and may also get refurbished ECD spaces, reading corners, and teacher training.
The initiative focuses on vulnerable children in both urban and rural areas, helping them access necessities and support for early education.

Rustenburg Girls’ High School in Cape Town will host its annual Cycla-thon at the V&A Waterfront tomorrow.
The 12-hour cycling relay will raise funds for Breadline Africa, which provides classrooms, libraries, and sanitation facilities for schools across South Africa.
Learners from several Cape Town schools will take part, while members of the public can also cycle on stationary bikes and donate.
Funds raised will go towards improving learning spaces for vulnerable children in both urban and rural communities.
