A black-winged kite rescued from a road between Sasolburg and Hennenman has been released back into the wild after receiving care from the Virginia SPCA.
The bird was found sitting near roadkill with cars passing close by, but after a night of rest and a good meal, it was strong enough to fly again.
Field Officer Peter Kamwaza, who recently had his sight restored through free cataract surgery, watched the kite disappear into the sky.

South Africans have planted more than 7.1 million trees since April as part of the Presidential One Billion Trees Programme.
The Western Cape recorded the highest total at more than two million, followed by KwaZulu Natal with over one million and Gauteng with just over one million.
The programme aims to support greener communities and climate action, with tree planting continuing across all nine provinces.

Eight Junior Para Cyclists Compete At National Youth Championships

Eight young South African para cyclists competed at the Cycling South Africa Youth Championships in Oudtshoorn, taking part in time trials and road races alongside other young cycling talent.
It was the first time junior para cyclists had competed at the national youth championships, giving riders from the Western Cape and Free State valuable experience in formal competition.
