Bromhof Knitwits donate blankets to elderly
Story 1
A group of women from the Bromhof Knitwits has donated about 30 handmade blankets to elderly residents at an assisted living facility in Ferndale.
The knitting and crocheting group, linked to the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative, delivered the items as part of ongoing efforts to support vulnerable people, particularly older residents who receive few family visits.
The facility's manager Lorraine Norval says the blankets have helped uplift residents and remind them they are cared for.
The group continues to produce blankets, scarves and beanies for people in need, saying their work is driven by a desire to bring comfort to others.

Spotify has opened a new Africa office in Rosebank, Johannesburg, in a move the company says will strengthen its presence and operations across the continent.
The office is expected to improve support for local artists by building closer working relationships with musicians, creators and industry partners and by providing a more direct link between the platform and the South African music market.
Spotify says the Johannesburg base will also help it respond faster to local industry needs and expand opportunities for African music to reach global audiences.
The company says the new office forms part of its long-term investment in the region’s creative economy.

Cape Town opens safe sleeping zone
Story 3
The Cape Town Central City Improvement District and The Haven Night Shelter will open a Safe Sleeping Zone in District Six on 2 June 2026 to provide overnight shelter for chronically homeless people in the CBD during winter.
The site will operate until September 2026 and will offer up to 60 beds each night.
Individuals will be referred through a controlled system and will receive beds, blankets, hot drinks, and meal tokens, with security and staff on duty overnight.
The initiative aims to ease pressure on existing shelters as demand for beds in Cape Town exceeds available capacity during winter.

Mthatha residents urged to recycle e-waste
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Residents of Mthatha, in Eastern Cape, are being encouraged to sell old and broken electronic appliances through a newly launched e-waste recycling programme by the Forestry, Fisheries and EnvironmentDepartment.
The programme is collecting old and unwanted appliances to encourage proper disposal and strengthen local recycling initiatives.
For years, recyclers in the area have had to transport electronic waste to KwaZulu-Natal due to limited recycling options closer to home.
