Joburg Ballet to stage African reimagining of The Bacchae in Johannesburg

Joburg Ballet and the University of Johannesburg Arts and Culture will present The Bacchae: An African Choral Ballet at the Mandela Theatre in Johannesburg from 3 to 12 July as part of the company’s 25th anniversary season.
The production reimagines the Greek tragedy through an African performance lens, blending ballet, indigenous movement, choral music and live orchestral performance.
The creative team includes director Jay Pather, composer Neo Muyanga and choreographer Mthuthuzeli November, with participation from the UJ Choir and emerging student creatives.

Spaza shop support fund boosts township businesses nationwide

More than 2,300 spaza shop owners across all nine provinces have been approved for funding from government’s R179 million allocation under the R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund.
The initiative aims to strengthen informal retailers by improving access to finance and supporting formal registration with municipalities.
It also provides operational guidance to improve efficiency and sustainability in small businesses.
Acting Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency CEO Nkosikhona Mbatha says more spaza shop owners are encouraged to apply so that the remainder of the fund can be distributed to eligible businesses.

Refurbished hospital wards to boost healthcare services in Gauteng

Gauteng Health MEC Faith Mazibuko is officially opening three refurbished wards at Kopanong District Hospital in Vereeniging and an upgraded male psychiatric ward at Sebokeng Regional Hospital on Monday.
The improvements include a renovated 30 bed paediatric ward, a reopened female psychiatric ward and an additional medical ward.
The department says the upgrades will help ease overcrowding, improve patient care and strengthen access to specialised mental healthcare services across the province.
