Fuel price cuts bring relief to motorists

South African motorists will pay less at the pump from today after fuel prices dropped.
Petrol is down by R2.01 a litre for 93 octane and R1.96 a litre for 95 octane, while diesel has decreased by between R3.14 and R3.59 a litre.
Illuminating paraffin is R5.23 a litre cheaper, while LP gas has increased by 16-cents a kilogram nationally and 19 cents a kilogram in the Western Cape.
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy says the price cuts are due to lower international oil prices and a stronger rand.

UFS opens Africa-First Research laboratory

The University of the Free State has opened a new research laboratory and installed a first-of-its-kind microscope in Africa to help scientists study animals, plants and diseases.
The new facilities support research into agriculture, biodiversity, veterinary science and disease while providing diagnostic services for farmers and industry partners.
Since opening last year, the laboratory has processed nearly 3,000 soil and root samples.
The R7.4 million investment will also support postgraduate research and enable scientists to study genetics and DNA with greater precision.

Dog Box Challenge raises R364,000 for SPCA

More than R364,000 has been raised for the Kloof and Highway SPCA through the annual Dog Box Challenge in Kloof, KwaZulu-Natal.
Participants spent a winter night sleeping in dog kennels after raising at least R10,000 each in sponsorship.
The challenge gave participants a glimpse into the conditions faced by shelter animals while raising funds for the SPCA.
The money will help provide veterinary care, food and shelter for rescued animals.
