UJ Delivers Free Glasses to Discovery Primary Learners After April Eye Tests
Story 1
Sixty-two learners at Discovery Primary School in Roodepoort received free reading glasses on 11 June, following comprehensive eye screenings conducted by third-year optometry students from the University of Johannesburg in April.
Each pair was tailored to the learner’s individual needs, improving their ability to read and learn effectively.
The project forms part of UJ’s community outreach programme, marking 20 years of academic impact.
Teachers say the glasses will make a significant difference, especially for pupils who couldn’t otherwise afford them.
Smiles and gratitude marked the handover, as learners saw their studies — and their futures — a little more clearly.

US Shifts Gear in Africa with Bold Trade Investments
Story 2
Several US companies have pledged new investments across Africa — from power lines to digital networks — signalling Washington’s growing push for trade-driven development.
The agreements were announced at the US-Africa Business Summit, which wrapped up in Luanda, Angola on Wednesday.
Key projects include a new 1,150-kilometre power line between Angola and the DRC, and 22 grain silos along the Lobito Corridor — a major US-backed railway linking key mineral hubs to Angola’s coast.
Other ventures aim to boost digital security in Angola, build a US LNG terminal in Sierra Leone, and invest in regional hydropower.
US officials say the deals show a shift from foreign aid to private investment as a path to long-term growth
