Wits University Leads Groundbreaking Nuclear Science Project to Protect South Africa’s Rhinos
Story 1
Wits University researchers are at the forefront of an innovative project using nuclear technology to protect South Africa’s rhinos from poaching.
The Rhisotope Project, developed in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency, embeds safe, low-level radioactive isotopes into rhino horns.
This makes the horns detectable by radiation scanners at borders worldwide, helping to intercept illegal trafficking.
After six years of research and testing, 29 rhinos have been treated with no harm to the animals confirmed.
Wits scientists used advanced techniques to prove the safety and effectiveness of the process, which is now operational and ready for wider use.
By combining nuclear science and conservation, this innovation offers hope in the fight to save one of Africa’s most iconic and endangered species.
