Chery plant upgrade to create jobs and boost local suppliers

Chery has announced plans to upgrade its Rosslyn plant in Pretoria, with production expected to begin by mid-2027. The project will retain much of the existing workforce and create nearly 3 000 new jobs across manufacturing, supply chain, and services.
The company is also developing a strong local supplier network to support production of electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and internal combustion vehicles.
Local manufacturing is expected to improve supply stability, shorten lead times, and strengthen South Africa’s automotive industry.

South Africa’s formal non agricultural sector ended 2025 on a positive note, with 18 000 jobs added in the fourth quarter, according to Statistics South Africa. Total employment rose from 10,533 million in September to 10,551 million in December, while full-time jobs also showed a slight quarter-on-quarter increase.
