Fifteen Years Strong: Empowerment and Innovation

Taking Care of Business (TCB) recently commemorated its 15-year journey of empowering South African families through entrepreneurship and the circular economy. Founded by Tracey Chambers and Tracey Gilmore, the organization has evolved from its humble beginnings as The Clothing Bank into a multifaceted non-profit that champions women’s financial independence, job creation, and environmental sustainability.

The journey of TCB has been marked by resilience and unwavering determination. What started as a simple initiative to redistribute surplus clothing has grown into a vibrant organization with a footprint in Gauteng, Cape Town, East London, and Durban. TCB faced significant challenges, most notably when one of their key buildings in Cape Town was destroyed by fire. Rather than allowing this setback to slow them down, the team rallied together more focused on their mission. This ability to overcome obstacles reflects the spirit of the entrepreneurs they support every day.

At the heart of TCB’s mission is the belief that entrepreneurship is a powerful tool for social change. Through its holistic two-year programmes, TCB equips unemployed South Africans with the skills and resources needed to become self-employed. Participants engage in business, financial, and mental health training and gain practical experience in running their own businesses. This practical approach makes sure that individuals are also supported throughout their entrepreneurial journey.

TCB’s impact is evident in its diverse range of programmes. The Resell programme empowers unemployed mothers to become successful fashion traders within the circular economy by “de-branding” and reselling donated clothing. The Repair program trains individuals to repair and trade appliances, reducing e-waste and providing valuable skills. The Remake program supports seamstresses in establishing micro-manufacturing businesses using repurposed textiles, contributing to sustainable fashion practices. Additionally, the Grow ECD program assists preschools in low-income communities to operate as sustainable businesses.

These initiatives not only create economic opportunities but also promote environmental responsibility. By diverting excess merchandise and waste from landfills, TCB contributes to a more sustainable economy. The organisation’s collaborations with major retailers (Woolworths, Truworths, Pick n Pay) facilitate the redistribution of excess stock, which is then transformed into business opportunities for participants. This model exemplifies how businesses can play a pivotal role in addressing social and environmental challenges.

The success of TCB is also reflected in the achievements of its participants. Many individuals have transformed their lives through the programs, becoming financially independent and inspiring others in their communities. For instance, Valerie Grootboom, once a domestic worker, now runs a successful business repairing and reselling clothing.

Beyond business development, TCB recognizes the importance of personal growth and mental well-being. The organisation offers life coaching and counselling services to help individuals build their confidence. This holistic approach addresses the head, heart, and hands, ensuring that participants are equipped not only with technical skills but also with the emotional resilience needed to succeed in their entrepreneurial endeavours.

As TCB looks to the future, its commitment to expanding its impact remains steadfast. With branches in Gauteng, Cape Town, East London, and Durban, the organization continues to reach more individuals. The 15-year milestone serves as a testament to the dedication and hard work of the team, partners, and participants who have contributed to the organisation’s success.

In conclusion, TCB’s 15-year anniversary marks a significant achievement in the journey toward economic empowerment and social change. The organisation’s work exemplifies the profound impact that can be achieved when communities come together to support and uplift one another.
