TUT Architecture Students Win National Contest, Set for Global Stage

Two final-year Bachelor of Architecture students from Tshwane University of Technology, Damian Ciaglia and Dineo Mogane, have won the national Saint-Gobain Architecture Student Contest.
Their project, Re:Light, focuses on sustainable design by blending light, timber, and local heritage to create a vibrant community hub in France.
The design includes renovating an old school building into a multi-use space and developing a new residential area, promoting community memory and sustainable growth.
This marks the third year in a row that TUT students will represent South Africa internationally, competing in Nord-Isère, France, from 16 to 18 June 2025.

The AVBOB Road to Literacy campaign has announced 1,000 new beneficiaries for 2025.
This nationwide initiative, in partnership with Oxford University Press South Africa, provides mobile trolley libraries stocked with 500 books each.
The books support literacy and numeracy in all 11 official languages and align with the CAPS curriculum.
This year, over 500,000 books will be distributed, doubling last year’s total.
The campaign focuses on improving foundational learning in schools and non-profit organisations, especially in under-resourced communities.
With a total investment of R57 million, the project helps children gain access to culturally relevant educational materials.
Thousands of nominations from across the country show strong community support for this vital programme.

This new multi-purpose site supports food production, knowledge sharing, and community gardening.
It aims to help both students and local communities access fresh, responsibly grown produce.
With food prices rising , the Hub focuses on building food systems that do not rely heavily on money.
Since 2015, Wits has grown several gardens on campus, providing fresh vegetables and mental wellness benefits to students.
The Hub will also host workshops, a seedbank, nursery, and compost site, encouraging sustainable, zero-input farming methods.
Partners and volunteers are committed to empowering communities to reduce hunger and dependency on aid through self-sustaining food production.
