A Mile in Their Slippers, With Heart and Hope

On a bright but chilly Joburg morning, members of the local media fraternity, supporters, and partners gathered for the official media launch of Slipper Day 2025. Hosted by Reach For A Dream, the event served as a powerful reminder that a simple act, such as wearing a pair of bed slippers, can have a profound impact on the lives of children battling life-threatening illnesses.

The air was alive with colour and yes, compassion. Slipper-shaped décor, inspirational displays of past dreams fulfilled, and touches of whimsy set the tone for an event grounded in what can only be described as ‘unswerving hope’. Guests arrived in their slippers, already embodying the spirit of the campaign.

Guiding the proceedings was celebrity chef and much-loved TV personality Benny Masekwameng, who brought his signature charm and sincerity to the role of MC. With warmth and humour, he welcomed attendees and highlighted the power of community in supporting the dreams of children who face unimaginable challenges.

The heart of the morning belonged to Julia Sotirianakos, CEO of Reach For A Dream. She took the audience through the Foundation’s journey - 36 years of making dreams come true for children diagnosed with illnesses such as cancer, organ failure, and chronic heart conditions. She spoke not only of dreams fulfilled, but of the courage, joy, and healing those moments bring to their young recipients. “Every R20 sticker sold”, she emphasized, “becomes a part of their personal journey”.

One of the most moving moments of the event came when Christopher Els, a previous dream recipient, took to the stage. His story a rare, personal glimpse into what receiving a dream truly means to a child facing life-threatening illness. Christopher shared how his dream gave him strength and joy at a time when he needed it most. Now thriving with a wife and kids, his presence at the event was a living testament to the campaign’s impact.

This year, Slipper Day will be held on 30 May, inviting South Africans to “Do It For The Dreamers” by purchasing a R20 sticker and wearing their slippers for a cause that matters. Stickers are available at Wimpy, Dischem, Pick n Pay, Toys R Us, and more, as well as online. Funds raised go directly toward fulfilling the dreams of children in hospitals across the country.

The media launch served as more than just a campaign kick-off - it was a powerful, emotional gathering that reminded everyone in the room why they choose to walk in slippers each year. With stories like Christopher’s and leadership like Julia’s, this year’s Slipper Day promises to be one of the most meaningful yet.

So come 30 May, whether you’re at school, in the office, or working from home—wear your slippers, buy your sticker, and help make dreams come true. Because for the children of Reach For A Dream, every dream fulfilled is a step toward healing, joy, and a future filled with possibility.
